Search Engine Optimization Stages

If you are planning a road trip, preparation is completed in stages.  If you are a professional driver, you will need to make sure each of the following stages is completed for a successful road trip.

  1. Complete any vehicle service that is due such as oil change, tire checks, and take care of any mechanical problems you may have.   Failure to do so may find your planned road trip has come to a complete halt.
  2. Clean the inside and outside of your vehicle.  This is for your comfort and for your image.
  3. Double check to make sure your registration and insurance cards are available and up to date.   Failure to do so could be costly.
  4. Get a map of your planned route.  This is a breeze with MapQuest or Google Maps.  You should do this for a back up even if you have a GPS.
  5. Plan for any meals and lodging needed along the way.
  6. Fill the vehicle up with Gas and plan for refuels in plenty of time to prevent walking instead of driving to the gas station during your road trip.

A Short Discussion to Clarify Meta Data

For some of you even the mention of Meta Tags in the title of an article today makes you scratch your head and wonder who does not know this and is still living in the dark ages of search engine optimization.  Yes, we find in our business that many people still are in the dark ages and do not understand that Meta Data are still of importance.

Others are still asking the question, what are Meta Data?  For those, we will take the time to explain this already seemingly ancient phrase.

Meta Data are blocks of html code that describe for the search engines what a specific website page represents.  These are not tags you can see on the web pages; you have to click View on your browser menu and then click the tab labeled Source to view the code.

The Meta Title is important when it comes to search engine listing of your site.  The title should include keywords relevant to the material on that particular page.

The Meta Description is visible below the title in the results from the search engine.   This provides a summary of the page for the viewer.   Meta descriptions should be no longer than 40 words and should relate to the first paragraph and contain a call to action.

The search engines have a unique and unusual manner in which they use these descriptions.  They can choose only portions of the description and then the description displayed on the search results may not make much sense.  But there isn’t much of an opportunity to argue about this with the search engines.

When it comes to Meta keywords, they do seem like a dinosaur of the past.  Google currently gives no regard to them at all while MSN and Yahoo place almost no value on them as well.   But it is still a good idea to add the keywords to the Meta tags.  They can still serve you well by helping you stay aware of the keywords you need on each page.

Each page of your website should have, at minimum, a Meta Description and Meta Title as they do still have importance.
